Produttori del Barbaresco-Jun 24-ENG

I had the privilege of visiting Produttori del Barbaresco in the heart of Barbaresco, right under the iconic Torre del Barbaresco in June 2024.

Not only did I try their flagship 2019/2020 vintages and two 2019 single , but I was also incredibly lucky to taste this perfectly conditioned 1970 Produttori del Barbaresco “Moccagatta” Riserva.

Here are some fascinating facts I discovered:

1. Barbaresco was initially listed as DOC and only received DOCG status in 1980, along with Barolo.
2. You won't see “Moccagatta” as a cru name anymore due to duplication with a winery name. It’s now called Muncagota, in Piedmontese dialect.
3. This is the 4th vintage of this cru (single vineyard), with the first production in 1967.
4. The bottle size is 720ml instead of the standard 750ml.
5. Muncagota is high elevation and southeast-facing with calcareous limestone. The morning sunshine helps retain the wine’s freshness and delicacy.

The wine was in perfect condition, no need to decant—it just opened up beautifully in the right glass.

  • Color:      Medium garnet towards tawny.

  • Nose:      Medium-plus intensity with notes of leather, cocoa, black tea, hazelnut, orange marmalade, strawberry spread, vanilla, and dried rose petals.

  • Palate:    Savory notes blended with sweetness from spice, dried cherries, and strawberries, although completely dry. Medium, silky tannins and bright acidity.

I’d say drink it now! This harmonious and textural wine has wonderfully evolved and developed.

I also tried two remarkable crus, side by side yet worlds apart: the 2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva and Asili Riserva!

The key difference?

Soil and terroir!

  • Rabajà:      More inland, higher up with a Southwest aspect, featuring limestone and clay rich in calcium with sandy veins. This promotes a powerhouse structure.

  • Asili:      Limestone with sandy veins, leading to a more elegant and approachable profile. It has a ruby, instead of garnet color.

2019 RISERVA RABAJÀ:

  • Fine depth with lots of “Power”

  • Structured high tannins

  • Emerging inner sweetness

  • Classic red berries, dried flowers, and subtle spice

2019 RISERVA ASILI:

  • Elegant structure

  • Fine tannins

  • Balanced acidity

  • Flavors of cherries, plums, and earthy undertones

  • Vibrant acidity and exceptional balance

Both wines have a long, persistent finish, showcasing their potential for aging. Cheers to the distinct beauty of these two incredible wines!
