2001 “Taken From Granite” Cabernet Sauvignon – Swan Song
I had the unique chance to try this wine at Carbone over the weekend: a Napa cult wine made by a cult—or spiritual organization, if you prefer. Thanks to Darren for the recommendation!
Produced by Gideon Beinstock during his tenure at the now-defunct Renaissance Vineyard and Winery, this is an extraordinary organic Cabernet Sauvignon made from 1970s vines planted on ungrafted rootstock over extremely rocky, mineral-rich granitic soils in the Sierra Foothills. Yields were low—barely 400 cases of this stunning red were produced.
As the name suggests, Swan Song marks the final release of Beinstock’s wines from the Renaissance Vineyard era. And 2001 is widely considered an excellent vintage for Napa.
At only 13.5% ABV, the wine is unlike any recent Napa vintages I’ve tasted—this is no fruit bomb. Yet, it remains impressively fruit-forward 24 years later. On the nose, I first picked up fresh blackcurrant, followed by black cherry, plum, light smoke, and a hint of mushroom.
On the palate, it delivers ripe black and red fruit layered with savory notes, cedar, and dried herbs. The tannins are silky and smooth, and the finish is long and subtly sweet.
An outstanding wine. I was wine-high—and had a solid 10-hour sleep afterward.

这款酒的酒精度仅为 13.5%，与近年来常见的纳帕赤霞珠风格截然不同——不是那种浓烈的果酱型“果弹”。然而，它在经历了 24 年的岁月洗礼之后，依然保持了惊人的果香活力。
👃 香气方面，首先扑鼻而来的是新鲜黑加仑，随后是黑樱桃、李子、轻微烟熏和蘑菇的气息，层次分明。
👄 入口则展现出 成熟黑红水果的浓郁交织，辅以咸香风味、雪松与干香草的点缀，单宁细腻柔滑，余味悠长，并带有一丝温柔而含蓄的“甜感”。
✨这是一款极具灵魂的赤霞珠，内敛而深邃。饮后整个人心情舒畅，当晚“酒飘飘”地睡了十个小时好觉。
